Alan: The following writing was composed in response to a Christian fundamentalist friend who (in keeping with the overall blindness and narrow-mindedness of "Christian" "conservatism") accuses me of being in denial about the evil worked by the Catholic Church, including evil that the Church imposed upon her mother.
I am not in denial.
I am fully aware of all sorts of fuck-ups in the Catholic Church, not least of which are the Crusades and Inquisition - utterly despicable endeavors.
But I am also prepared to forgive people (and institutions) that turn to the light.
In the main, the Catholic Church has, in my view, the best "social justice" advocacy of any large institution in the world, as well as the world's best educational system.
I have no intention of throwing out the baby with the bath.
Alan: Not only do I believe mercy and eternal damnation are mutually incompatible, I also believe -- and my conviction grows daily -- that people who believe that a great many of their brothers and sisters are "going to Hell," end up embodying cruelty.
Their twisted logic goes like this: "Since God is going to eternally torment The Damned anyway, why shouldn't we give them a foretaste of what they've got coming?"
Furthermore, ever since the 2nd Vatican Council -- and even more so with the papacy of Francis -- I think the Catholic Church is the most admirable institutional "actor" on the world stage.
Not surprisingly, "Christian" "conservatives" --- who mostly support Malignant Messiah and his boastful love of money which Paul calls "the root of all evil" --- are opposed to Pope Francis.
