But this much is certain: they seem incapable of the fundamental moral exercise of imagining consequences: e.g., not wearing masks increases the chances that people with serious "background conditions" will die from COVID disease.
Like Trump himself, their radical self-interest makes them incapable of empathy - at least when it comes to people who don't look or "think" like themselves.
There is a theory that the reason we humans have not yet discovered extraterrestrial intelligent life is because intelligent beings evolve to a point where certain existential questions are just too daunting - too frightful - and so, consciously or unconsciously, they decide to kill themselves.
