Alan: To be certain that God is on our side fuses hubris with self-apotheosis.

To pretend that we know the mind/will of God -- particularly when this presumed "knowledge" is used to justify our moral judgment of others -- insults the unfathomable mystery of God/Universe - what Christian mystics have called the Magnum Mysterium. 

Clearly, we can do our best to "be on God's side" within the confines of our own flawed conscience, but to declare our knowledge of God's will with absolute certainty is precisely why absolutism is an ipso facto human error.

A necessary part of "doing our best" is to foreswear certain knowledge of God's will, particularly as it relates to God's view of righeousness and "justification."
