Alan: The bible contains two different accounts of the so-called "Sin of Sodom."
In Genesis, Sodom's Sin seems to be anal intercourse between men.
However, in Ezekiel's account of Sodom's Sin, the culprit is that Sodom's inhabitants "were arrogant, overfed and unconcerned; they did not help the poor and needy."
No mention of sodomy.
None.
And so, while biblical "literalists" pretend that literalism is possible, they -- like everyone -- choose to believe the Genesis account while ignoring Ezekiel which makes NO mention of sodomy, but does mention spiritual sins which are routinely more deadly than sins of the flesh.
Biblical Literalism And The Cultivation Of Hatred
"We" are all "Cafeteria Christians" believing what we want to believe, but paying little (or no) attention to the competing narratives (on almost every topic) that run through the bible like Jekyll and Hyde.
And so, prissy Christians are chiefly interested in pointing fingers as their self-justification of choice. "I am not like THOSE sinners."

"The Hard, Central Truth Of Contemporary Conservatism"
Since everyone recognizes that sex is something of a forbidden fruit, what easier way to convince oneself of "Salvation Assurance" than to do nothing but beat up on carnal sinners, while completely ignoring arrogance, gluttony and selfishness, a punitive and presumtuous frame of mind that distracts The Saved from the just claims of the poor and needy.
Again, we are all "Cafeteria Christians."
But some Christians are chiefly interested in finger-wagging, without lifting a finger on behalf of the poor who "should" be lifting themselves up by their bootstraps.
Since repetition is the lion's share of learning, I draw your attention to Ezekiel's account of Sodom's Sin which is that inhabitants of Sodom "were arrogant, overfed and unconcerned; they did not help the poor and needy."
The Hard, Central Truth Of Contemporary Conservatism
The hard, central "fact" of contemporary "conservatism" is its insistence on a socio-economic threshold above which people deserve government assistance, and below which people deserve to die.
The sooner the better.
Unless conservatives are showing n'er-do-wells The Door of Doom, they just don't "feel right."
Having poked their own eyes out, they fail to see that self-generated wrath creates "the gods" who hold them thrall.
Almost "to a man," contemporary "conservatives" have apotheosized themselves and now -- sitting on God's usurped throne -- are rabid to pass Final Judgment.
Self-proclaimed Christians, eager to thrust "the undeserving" through The Gates of Hell, are the very people most likely to cross its threshold.
Remarkably, although they are prone to believe all manner of Trumpeted nonsense, none of them are tempted to believe in their own spiritual peril.

Here's What They "Look Like" Today
Except, of course, for the loaves and fishes.
But never mind.
If you can rationalize Trump, you can rationalize anything.
I repeat.
Self-proclaimed, judgmental Christians, eager to thrust "the undeserving" through The Gates of Hell, are the very people most likely to cross its threshold.
The essential litmus that separates the merciful from the unmerciful; the compassionate from the uncompassionate; the loving from the unloving is to abandon judgment, or at least temper it with mercy. “Judge not, that you be not judged. For with the judgment you pronounce you will be judged, and with the measure you use it will be measured to you. Why do you see the speck that is in your brother's eye, but do not notice the log that is in your own eye? Or how can you say to your brother, ‘Let me take the speck out of your eye,’ when there is the log in your own eye? You hypocrite, first take the log out of your own eye, and then you will see clearly to take the speck out of your brother's eye.
“Judge not, and you will not be judged; condemn not, and you will not be condemned; forgive, and you will be forgiven
Therefore you have no excuse, O man, every one of you who judges. For in passing judgment on another you condemn yourself, because you, the judge, practice the very same things. We know that the judgment of God rightly falls on those who practice such things. Do you suppose, O man—you who judge those who practice such things and yet do them yourself—that you will escape the judgment of God?
For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but in order that the world might be saved through him.
