Greetings,
It's worth letting the following video clip "loop" a while.
It wasn't until the fifth or sixth repetition that I laughed out loud.
I realize that the caller is participating in the breakdown of civility that propels America's Cultural Cold War.
But even so...
It is hard to imagine that the United States will endure without experiencing the kind of "centrifugal" breakdown/scattering that occured in the Soviet "Union."
Turning and turning in the widening gyre
The falcon cannot hear the falconer;
Things fall apart; the centre cannot hold;
Mere anarchy is loosed upon the world,
The blood-dimmed tide is loosed, and everywhere
The ceremony of innocence is drowned;
The best lack all conviction, while the worst
Are full of passionate intensity.

I encourage you to think of such a breakdown as a divorce propelled by irreconcilable differences.
I also encourage you to consider that Ancient Rome became Italy, and the Spanish Empire became modern Spain. There is also the evolutionary experience of France, Portugal, Holland and Germany.
Not to mention the great good news that the Soviet Union fell apart - virtually overnight - without a shot being fired.
I would much prefer reconciliation to rupture, but there is always a threshold beyond which even "angels fear to tread."
In any event, I believe it is best to be prepared.
At least give thought to the theoretical groundwork.

Unlike many of you, I communicate with Trumpistas nearly every day, sometimes multiple times a day.
Hyperbole aside, I tell you this:
I encourage you to contemplate a divided nation in which white nationalists are obliged to stare down the barrel of their own chaos.
Perhaps they will see the benightedness of "cutting off their nose to spite their face."
And as night follows day, without leftists to demonize, the dimwits will soon cannibalize themselves.
Remember: Trump cultists - and QAnoners - are only motivated by malice.
Without belligerent engagement of enemies, they are nothing.

Something both north and south new in the Civil War is that because of its size and more or less forgiving terrain it is only defendable as a whole. Rendering it in two will produce an inevitable war over resources and values. Render it into multiple autonomous and sovereign states and you will watch Mexico and Canada peel parts off until the remainder must choose which tyrant to live with which is the basic choice today.
Dear Tom,
Alan
Thanks.
Mexico should get Texas back.
And I propose a deliberate federation/commonwealth with Canada.
But mostly I want the "clear and present" prospect of two sovereign "American" polities to become so real as a political possibility that the additional danger you mention would be even more reason for the bible belt neo-confederates to take a hard look at the consequences of rupture, thus making it more likely they would turn back from the precipice and admit to necessary changes like elimination of the filibuster and -- get this -- compromise as the indispensable cornerstone of democracy.
As for the particular tyrant we'd live under, I think Trump-Cult Autocrat Party is the only tyranny that's a real menace.
I don't see Mexico occupying -- and certainly not holding -- any U.S. territory, if only because Texans would devise their own equivalent of the Viet Cong and those decentralized terrorists would bleed Mexico dry. (I believe two sovereign polities in place of the USA would make both those sovereign states as dangerous for foreign meddlers as Afghanistan has been time out of mind.)
There's also the question of nuclear deterrence.
As for Canada, I see our neighbors to the north as too civilized to attempt an Uncle-Sam-style "invasion/takeover." https:// en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ Timeline_of_United_States_ military_operations
Furthermore, I think Canada would be wide-open to a European Union style federation - at least with "Blue States of America.
For that matter, I think Mexico would be open to a federation.
And after the formation of CanUsIco, on to the hemisphere:
To Compete With China, The United States Should Promote A "Hemispheric Federation"
In any event, China will soon be the planet's ruling hegemon.
And when the torch is passed, I doubt Beijing would tolerate Canada or Mexico's quest for lebensraum.
... unless of course, we actually create a Hemispheric Federation to prevent Beijing from meddling in the America's.
I see a golden opportunity pretty much mandated by realpolitik.i
In any event, "it's an entirely new ballgame" and its actual lineaments are (as I see it) completely up in the air.
Thanks again Tom for sharing your thoughts.
Pax
Alan
