We Know How To Repair-And-Reform Democracy To Make It Workable As A Mechanism For Enhancing "The General Welfare" And "The Common Good." But Yahoo-Know-Nothings And Their Plutocratic-Oligarchic Overlords Are Hostile To Workable Democracy

Dear F,

Thanks for your email about the Electoral College and the indispensable need for its abolition.

There are lots of workable solutions to our most knotty political problems -- like my proposal for a two year sequence of American History, taught dialectically, as a prerequisite for high school graduation.

But people -- at least American yahoos and Know-Nothings (including George and Mary) -- are just too dumbf*ck (or too perversely "oppositional-defiant") to do the right-and-reasonable thing.

These folks never got past the sound bites of middle school with its hallway queen bees and back-lot bullies. (I consider the Trump administration an aggregate of failed Middle Schoolers whose development was forevermore arrested in those less-than-hallowed-halls.)

So, in light of ubiquitous yahooism, the question becomes: "What is politically feasible?"

Lamentably, the Electoral College is embedded in the constitution and was put there as part of The Great Compromise without which there would have been no "United States of America" because the constitution would not have been ratified.

Remember!

America could not pass a measure as innocuous as the Equal Rights Amendment - a proposal that pretty much sought to approve motherhood and apple pie.

But!

Ranked Choice Voting might be an alternative that accomplishes the same goal of "bypassing the Electoral College" (at least as it has operated in the past), without having to enact a constitutional amendment. https://www.politico.com/magazine/story/2019/05/04/electoral-college-reform-2020-226792

I will add that my plan for requiring two years of American History -- taught dialectically as a pre-requisite for high school graduation -- is not likely to get traction overnight, but debating the idea would be illuminating, just as debating a National Holiday in honor of General Smedley Butler would light up the prevailing darkness.

In the end, ALL POLITICAL "GOODS" hinge on effective education.

There is no skipping this step.

And there are few educational methods as fruitful as "ongoing national debate of Big Topics"... as opposed to shouting matches over bullshit minutiae like "NO NEW TAXES!"

And never forget.

The alternative to effective education is, in fact, catastrophe.

I repeat.

The alternative to effective education is, in fact, catastrophe.

Without effective education, "Trump" will happen again.

And the next time The Autocrat Party wins The Oval Office, the death knell will sound for American Democracy - except for the platitudes, flag-waving and window-dressing.

I truly believe the only way we'll overcome the Rep. Party overtaking the Presidency again is to get rid of the Electoral College.

The sane will always outnumber the crazies and the majority can rule going forward.
