I Discuss Bill Barr's Catholicism With My Sister Janet

Unless Truth Is Richly Contextualized, It Is Likely That Uneducated, Ideologically-Driven People (Who Never Learned How To Think In Context), Will Use Fragmented Shards Of Truths To Tell Colossal Lies

Dear Janet,


The Church's bias in the direction of fixating on carnal sins - to the relative exclusion of spiritual sins - is problematic to say the least.

Sadly very few people -- even liberal Catholics -- are, for example, interested in the cardinal "sin of pride" although if pride had been given primacy since Vatican II, that reconsideration and focus might have made Catholics critical and wary of Trump, a poster boy for arrogance and hubris...in addition to all Seven Deadly Sins, with the arguable exception of Sloth.

But what is most irksome to me (and most persistently irksome) is the ignorance of Catholic Social Teaching.

Barr's determination to re-instate capital punishment at the federal level is an astonishing display of contrariety and perversity. 

In the terminology of traditional Catholic moral theology, I would say Barr has normalized mortal sin and can not receive the sacraments until he repents by reversing course. In the meantime the one and half gallons of blood in the body of every person executed under his revised protocols is on his head, drenching slowly all over his body. Barr should be made to don sack and ash, then spend several days on the Cathedral steps begging forgiveness of all comers.

That abortion (never mentioned by Jesus nor in the entire bible for that matter... https://www.christianbiblereference.org/faq_abortion.htm) should be held as an ABSOLUTELY INVIOLABLE principle (a moral offense that serves as justification for conservative Catholics (and conservative Christians generally) to consider pro-choice people as "Baby Killers" when, in fact, "pro-birth" people (as Sister Joan encourages us to call them) may be responsible for even higher abortion rates, is not only bizarre on its own terms but spotlights the perceived absurdity of conceiving pro-death-penalty Catholics (and other pro-death-penalty Christians) as "Cold Blooded Murderers With Pre-Meditated Malice Aforethought" (which they emphatically are).

Here is my NEW thought for the day.

The role played by Catholic Social Teaching is like a sop thrown to liberal Catholics to make them think there is, at least, a kind of theoretical equivalency, when I would argue that Absolute Proscription Of Abortion is, in effect, The Largest State in "The United States of Catholicism," whereas Catholic Social Teaching is like a remote territory, let's say what American Samoa is the United States.

And so, The Largest State is Totally Validated and gets to make REAL "ROCK OF THE AGES" POLICY, whereas the remote Samoan territory of Catholic Social Doctrine recalls the laughability of the following meme:

I will refrain from expletive, but invite you to consider which epithet you consider most appropriate.

And finally - despite its post-climactic quality in the context of this letter -- I think the Supreme Court's validation of the "Christian" bakers who refused to bake a wedding cake for two gay guys is such a categorically wrong turn (on the same order of wrongness as the Citizens United decision) that God-karma may have no choice but to cancel American culture. 

And that might not be a bad thing if the residual Blue States then go about the business of creating a Hemispheric Union, starting with Canada.

The pièce de résistance of canceling American culture would be to enlist the help of civilized countries, starting with Europe, to boycott Jesusland -- long, hard and completely -- just the way civilized nations boycotted South Africa to put an end to the barbarism "down under." (The only think Jesusland has to sell that is relatively scarce in The United States of Education and Compassion is oil - and, to my own surprise, three of the ten highest oil producing states are blue.)
