"The Solution To Just About Everything: Working Less": The Importance Of Creating Your Own Work In The World, Rather Than Toiling To Accomplish The Agenda Of Someone You Wouldn't Even Want As A Friend

Alan: I will begin with an observation I made 25 years ago while teaching public high school: When it comes to one's chosen occupation, the most important thing is to define -- and undertake -- one's own work in the world.

We pay far too much attention to working on the agendas of people we barely know - may not know at all - and quite likely wouldn't want to know.

Insofar as many of these people embody capitalist piggery at its worst, just what does our all-consuming service to them mean?

Maybe it doesn't mean much.

Maybe it means a lot.

In my own life, I've concluded it doesn't mean much, and may even contribute to the wellspring of meaninglessness in the modern world, or to the destruction of meaning.

In any event, I'm pretty sure -- in my own noggin -- that the solution to just about everything is working less, at least insofar as "work" refers to self-"enslaving" toil.

I first saw the distinction between "good work" and "soul-sapping toil" (which, etymologically is derived from the word "travail") while teaching at Orange High School and C.W. Stanford Middle School in the early 1990s - and I realized that curricula were (often, if not regularly) skewed in the direction of "occupational subservience" to people I would not want as friends.
