Spencer Tracy won the Best Actor Oscar for his superb performance in"Inherit The Wind,"(a GREAT movie with one of the best scripts ever)
Bukowski’s quote reminds me of the 1960 masterpiece I’ve stumbled upon - “Inherit the Wind” - with its astonishingly well-balanced dialogue for a movie about the “Scopes Monkey Trial,” which, on the surface, seems an open-and-shut case.
Lots of “common folk” want the comforts of “old-time” religion, and assume that the black-and-white, heaven-or-hell, highly-prejudicial worldview it entails, is necessary fallout in order that most simple folk “feel good about themselves.”
Why…
It’s a lot like 75,000,000 Americans voting for Donald Trump — a second time!! - to guarantee their ideological comfort, which is to say their fire-and-brimstone hatred of “others.”
It’s not enough that “the others” - whoever they may be - are always somebody else’s “others.”
They simply cannot live and let live.
Conservative Christians’ “others” must be God-damned -- mostly so they can feel “righteous,” which, tragically, is to say, “Self-Righteous.”
