Dear Jane
This is a fitting moment to repeat my frequent observation...

PS I belong to two extended latino families; one in (and around) Hillsborough - the other in the Cinco Seรฑores barrio of Oaxaca. The feeling of being embedded in latino families cannot be put in words. But "at the structural level," it can be said that the support, resilience -- and even buoyancy -- of "belonging" to a Mexican family, is totally palpable, soulfully uplifting, and absolutely dependable.
PPS What we find in these "United" States is that there has never been -- anywhere in the world, nor at any time in history -- such a high percentage of "single person households." I believe that the fundamental experiment being played out in the United States is whether a society can survive without "the three generation family" in which grandparents, parents and children are all interwoven into one another's lives. It is, of course, possible that we humans are sufficiently psycho-socially plastic to abandon the three generation family, but don't bet the farm.
Here is my other version of the meme above
