American Conservatives are stuck in the past.

They  believe that every important human accomplishment has already been achieved; most notably Christian conservatives' conviction that nearly everything of epochal significance took place in Old Testamental and New Testamental times.

But here's the rub...

Until 1750, half of all human beings died by age 8.

And until the late 1800's, typical humans lived half their lives with toothache.

Sadly, the loftiness of ancient religious "principles" has had little impact on the alleviation of suffering, except insofar as belief-in-principles imparts a heroically stoic attitude.

Much of the good imparted by ancient religions -- and there has been Great Good -- is the ability to tolerate suffering but not to alleviate it - or better yet - end it.
