Alan: It is the nature of democracy to respect value systems with radically different axioms and fundaments.
However, when people consider themselves devotees of the "one, true, holy and apostolic" religion, any "infidel" who does not subscribe to "a good Christian's" Transcendent Truth ends up marginalized.
Initially, this marginalization seems inconsequential.
But "when push comes to shove" (and myriad "trolls" in this world enjoy pushing people around, hoping they get hurt or killed) we soon find ourselves confronting Pascal's admonition that "Men never do evil so completely and cheerfully as when they do it from religious conviction."
It is so hard to take in the magnitude of what Pascal is saying that I repeat:
"Men NEVER DO EVIL SO COMPLETELY AND CHEERFULLY as when they do it from RELIGIOUS CONVICTION."
Autodidact longshoreman-philosopher Eric Hoffer made a similarly frightful observation: "Absolute faith corrupts as absolutely as absolute power."
Lamentably, for people who are so weak that they must believe in their Absolute Rightness, it is literally unthinkable -- inconceivable -- that they could be wrong.
QAnon is home to such believers.
They act in accordance with their unshakeable conviction that -- not only are they absolutely right, but that God Almighty ordains-and-authorizes them to be His infallible agents and, not infrequently, his avenging "angels."
Since many Christian absolutists believe that infidels will be forever thrust into a Lake of Unquenchable Fire, anything "true believers" do to these malefactors is trivial foreshadowing of what God Himself has in store.
So, why not unleash Hell on Earth?
Let the torment begin!
It's what they've got coming!
