"As I write, I recall an event from over 50 years ago.
Only once in my life did I debate formally when opportunity arose to replace an indisposed member of the University of Toronto debating team.
We won that debate, and afterward the moderator singled me out for having been unusually effective agreeing with the opposition... but only until "I dropped the other shoe."
Surely, someone will ask Joe to comment on his history with the women's rights movement, in particular why he was so lame - if not openly abusive - in his treatment of Anita Hill during Clarence Thomas' Supreme Court nomination hearing.
Joe is perfectly positioned to perp a twin coup here, first admitting that he had been a jerk and that he sorely regrets his stupidity and benightedness.
Then, after opening with a straightforward admission of guilt and wrongdoing. he would refer to his time in the White House as Barack Obama's veep.
"And you know what folks? We opposed same-sex marriage, another decision I have come to regret. But between our first term and our second, we changed. We saw the error of our ways and turned to the light. And going through that conversion, we became ardent supporters of everyone's right to express their love as they see fit. So, who do you want for your president? Someone who is open to learning how to correct his mistakes? Or someone whose knee-jerk reaction is -- ALWAYS -- to double down on bullshit. And the more wrong he is, the more he doubles down, and triples down. And he persists in his perversity because he's too weak, too cowardly, too twisted from a lifetime of lying to remember what it's like to tell the truth.""
As a follow-up, I'll include a passage I frequently cite - a passage that is particularly pertinent to our political climate.
