Dear Ed
Thanks for your email, proposing Biden's resignation, thus making Kamala the 47th President of The United States.
I love it!
Biden Should Resign
My niece sent this, and I'll be damned if I don't com;letely agree with it: "Now Joe needs to resign, sending Kamala to the Presidency for the last two months, making her the 47th President. Then while she's there, sign executive orders and codify Roe V Wade and set term limits for the Supreme Court. And she would be able to do all of this legally since the Supreme Court ruled a sitting President is above the law. She could conceivably order recounts and 'find some more voters' without fear of criminality. She can change the rules for an election so that anyone with a convicted felony on their record wouldn't ever be able to run or be sworn in for any office in the land. She could give Trump a taste of his own medicine without any repercussions whatsoever.

Although the following is only a pipe dream, I have similarly thought that since Trump endangers the constitution — and presidents are sworn to “uphold and protect the constitution from all threats, domestic and foreign” -- perhaps Joe himself would see fit to use recent Supreme Court authorization to eliminate the deadly malignancy. https://www.cnn.com/2024/11/08/politics/trump-grasps-unprecedented-power-supreme-court-immunity/index.html
On the surface, my suggestion seems preposterous.
On the other hand, we are reenacting “Germany in the 30s,” and I live dumbfounded by all “the good Amer-Germans” many (or even most) of whom -- in hindsight -- devoutly wish that someone had killed Hitler while he was on the rise — and while they had the chance.
Currently, all these people are as quiet as church mice, offering no resistance whatsoever, not even theoretical.
Later today, I will send you (as part of a planned mass email) an alternative plan for speaking up and acting out.
The opportunity is staring us in the face.
But because we humans tend to be cautious, if not cowardly, incrementalists, prone to “overlook the obvious" (with remarkable ease and striking regularity), the possibility I will outline is simply not on anyone’s bingo card.
Yes, we are pretty much f*cked no matter how we slice it.
I venture that from a god's eye view, we are a benighted people.
But if karma is real, and justice is embedded in the long haul of history, it seems inevitable that the American Empire would endure an ugly passing.
Ironically, by diminishing or replacing American democracy with the theocratic autocracy the authoritarians seem to have in mind, the overlooked consequence of Trump's dimwittedness is the accelerating ascendancy of China into the role of global hegemon. (Remember. China has more honors students than we have students.)
Yes, we are stupid, ignorant people. (Trump won both houses of congress, and The White House with a plurality of 6 million popular votes.)
But the fact that we do not acknowledge our willingness -- even our eagerness -- to contribute to China’s unstoppable ascendancy, is stunning.
As an aside within this aside, I will mention my long-standing proposal that the American hemisphere create a Federated Union much like the European Union, and then both these unions would unite, providing the talent resources, and the demographic clout to at least provide a dialectical pole as creative counterpoint for what will soon become China’s unilateral global hegemony.
To Compete With China, The United States Should Promote A "Hemispheric Federation"
Political theater (albeit “just” theater) has real use and real benefit.
Now is the time.
And time is running out.
Shall we go out with a whimper?
Or shall we go out raging against the dying of the light?
Pax et amor
Alan
PS And then, there is this question: "Might China's hegemony be an improvement?"
I mean, look where The American Way has ended up?
