Why The Bible Belt Is Not Only Lawless, But Bloodthirsty

Here in the South (where I now live), natives will sometimes refer to a recently murdered person with this expression, "He needed killing."

For nearly three decades I thought this "seal of approval" was just a malicious oddity, born of backwoods ignorance - Hatfield and McCoy tribalism.

Now I realize that the expression grew out of the entrenched "bible belt mindset" which - until recently - applauded lynching; a mindset obscenely displayed during the January 6th insurrection when a gallows was built in front of the Capitol Building and insurrectionists chanted "Hang Mike Pence. Hang Mike Pence" (Meanwhile Malignant Messiah, leader of the insurrection, did nothing to call off his lickspittle seditionists).

Here is the nub.

When southerners say "He needed killing", they are approving (or at least "signing off" on) the fact that their murderous fellows "did the right thing" when "they took the law into their own hands."

And so Trump cult - which is, at bottom, a bible belt demographic - is essentially lawless.

Not only do bible belters frequently hold the rule of law in contempt, they routinely think of themselves as beholden to "the law of God" which  in their small, vengeful, cruel minds means that they are obligated to do any damn thing they think "God's law" means.

If God is prepared to kill someone for his/her transgressions... these fundamentally lawless, bloodthirsty people "want in on the action."

Divinely-ordained agents of God's Will.

Notably, American conservatives spotlight murder rates in big cities, ignoring that the states with the highest murder rates statewide are, invariably, southern bible-banging states, or outlying right-wing bastions like Alaska.

Here are the 10 states with the highest murder rate:

  1. Louisiana (12.4 per 100k)
  2. Missouri (9.8 per 100k)
  3. Nevada (9.1 per 100k)
  4. Maryland (9 per 100k)
  5. Arkansas (8.6 per 100k)
  6. Alaska (8.4 per 100k)
  7. Alabama (8.3 per 100k)
  8. Mississippi (8.2 per 100k)
  9. Tennessee (7.8 per 100k)
  10. South Carolina (7.8 per 100k)

"Special guest appearance" by Representative Marjoie Taylor Greene, an ignorant, indoctrinated cultist:

‘I’ll never forget their screams’: Marjorie Taylor Greene says jailed Capitol rioters ‘are suffering greatly’

(This ridiculous woman will never hear the screams of the socio-economically deprived and depraved people who are crying out for justice, starting with economic justice. She only hears the screams of her equally ridiculous tribe. No understanding at all of "the other".)
Excerpt: I've never seen human suffering like I witnessed last night. While some were shown to us in seemingly beneficial programs, others were in tortuous lockdown," later adding, "Some inmates were receiving continuing education classes, others were truly suffering from long stays in solitary confinement for 'bad behavior.' I'll never forget hearing their screams. This was in a different part of the jail, not the J6 part. Being alone surely is hell."
Alan: The American psyche is profoundly punitive. We want people to suffer far more than we want them reformed.
