Thanks for circulating "The New Donatism" - a good article published by a consistently good magazine.
Seldom has the 5th century been so timely.
"Salvation assurance" is a topic too large to embark in this forum, but I will mention that Donatism's' obsession with purity (or at least the appearance of purity) partakes of the same lineage as conservative Christians' incessant moral vigilance and pharisaic finger-wagging.
Here is what right-wing television personalities report on the topic: https://twitter.com/i/status/ 1118228314257350657
I keep in daily touch with rigid Christians and full-bore QAnoners who - like many of their fellows - believe moral rigidity and strict adherence to exclusionary absolutism are the surest -- and most reassuring -- signs that they have been "Saved!"
And what better way to demonstrate one's moral rectitude than to allege that "the unsaved" eat babies and sex-traffic five year olds?
Nothing riles "The Righteous" like a Roe v. Wade baby killer.

An interesting historical perspective on those American bishops who see themselves as the arbiters of political positions under the guise of purity of souls.
