Rape... And Blaming The Victim (Don't Miss: "Is The Bible More Violent Than The Quran?")

Alan: Much time and energy is devoted to justifying and normalizing thoughtless instinctual behavior, Like most human behaviors, our primate urges are given free rein by parental and cultural modeling,.. or sometimes, just lack of modeling.

If Christian conservatives really wanted to learn from the Bible (instead of using it as a "wishful thinking Rorschach Test," they could start by pondering this assemblage of Old Testament verses:

"Is The Bible More Violent Than The Quran?"

The Shame Lies in Raping, Not in Being Raped

Nicholas Kristof, The New York Times

In rural India, a 16-year-old girl reported that she had been raped. The villagers beat up the alleged rapist, but they also believed the girl had shamed them by being raped. So they tied the girl to her alleged rapist and paraded them together around the village. They spat at the girl to show their contempt for her. Stories like this make me seethe; it’s because of incidents like this that my wife, Sheryl, and I wrote in our book “Half the Sky,” and obviously the tragedies persist. When will people understand that the shame lies in raping, not in being raped?

The same lesson applies to Ethiopia’s brutal war in its Tigray region. My Times colleague Declan Walsh reports that rape has been used as a weapon of war in Tigray. This happens in part because of impunity, so it’s important for U.N. officials and world leaders to shout this from every mountaintop and make Ethiopian leaders understand that they may some day face accountability in a tribunal.
