Four years ago, my new column notes, after news organizations called the 2016 presidential race for Donald Trump, Hillary Clinton spoke to her supporters. “We must accept this result,” she declared. “Donald Trump is going to be our president. We owe him an open mind and the chance to lead.”

Yes, it’s hard to make concession speeches. One of my favorite lines comes from Adlai Stevenson’s concession speech of 1952, saying he “felt like a little boy who had stubbed his toe in the dark. He was too old to cry, but it hurt too much to laugh.” But Stevenson called on his supporters to back Dwight Eisenhower, his opponent.

This is the norm in American politics, but Trump is breaching it in ways that undermine the American political system and risk political violence. And that’s the topic of my new column.
