My Last Pre-Election "Debate" With A Trump Devotee

Dear Elaine,

Thanks for your email.

Litter is the least of our problems.

Are you aware of the huge number of conspiratorial Trump supporters who SWEAR that the mass murder in Sutherland Springs did not take place?

Lest we forget, those people are your allies.

Conspiracy theories and harassment of victims' families

Fake news websites and far-right activists published misleading stories and conspiracy stories about the incident.[84][85][86][87] They associated the shooter with a range of people and groups the far-right opposes[85] such as identifying him as a Democrat, Hillary Clinton supporter, Bernie Sanders supporter, Alt-left supporter, or radical Muslim;[88][86] or claiming that he carried an antifa flag and told churchgoers, "This is a communist revolution."[89][90][91] Some reports falsely claimed that he targeted the church because they were "white conservatives".[85] U.S. Representative Vicente González twice incorrectly named the shooter as "Sam Hyde", a comedian who is often jokingly referred to as the perpetrator on social media. González said that he had been given that name by officials.[92]

Conspiracy theories circulated at the hospital where victims were being treated. According to The Washington Post, a group of women who said they knew the victims were overheard discussing the shooting as a false flag operation designed to manipulate the public towards some nefarious end. The Post reporter sought to inquire further, but the women pushed her away, saying, "She [the reporter] is part of it [the conspiracy]," after which the reporter was removed from the hospital by police.[84] The misinformation mirrored similar events in the aftermath of the Las Vegas shooting a few weeks earlier, in which perpetrator Stephen Paddock was falsely linked to leftist and Islamist groups.[85]

In 2018, two conspiracy theorists, Jodi Mann and Robert Ussery, were arrested after accosting the church's pastor, whose daughter was killed in the shooting. Both were charged with trespassing and resisting arrest, and Ussery was also charged with making a terroristic threat and possession of marijuana. Mann and Ussery deny that the massacre occurred and instead promote "false flag" conspiracy notions on the Internet, asserting that the Sutherland Springs attack and other attacks were orchestrated for political purposes.[93]

In the last election, conservatives worked themselves into a lather over MS-13.

Today MS-13 has, at most, trivial importance for conservatives.

Now, this same need to be afraid of a group that can be easily demonized focuses on Antifa.

And four years from today, Antifa will have trivial significance for conservatives.

The Confederate flag (or, in this instance, the Confederate battle flag) is a symbol that epitomizes political treachery
by people who were determined to topple the United States of America by treasonous activity.

If Trump and his devotees are intent to provoke some kind of second Civil War, I propose we first consider the following:

Is It Time For Red States And Blue States To Collaborate On The Creation Of Two Nations?

I speak Spanish fluently and spend more time with latinos than I do with "white" people.

Even so...

Neither I, nor my latino friends - nor anyone else I know - has ever had interaction with an MS-13 member, much less a threatening interaction.

And I would bet loooonnnnnnngggggggggggggggg odds that neither you -- nor any of your friends -- have ever had interaction with an MS-13 member.

Nor will you.

Like Antifa, MS-13 is almost entirely a bogeyman. In the first presidential debate, Trump's allegation that Biden was downplaying Antifa, it turns out that Biden was citing Christopher Wray, the fellow Trump himself appointed to replace James Comey as head of the FBI. https://www.usatoday.com/story/news/factcheck/2020/10/01/fact-check-quote-attributed-biden-antifa-missing-context/5885435002/

In large part, the non-existent threat of MS-13 to middle class white people (and nearly everyone else as well) is because gangs are highly territorial, a self-limiting behavior which pretty much confines them to a small number of blighted inner-city neighborhoods.

The VERY LAST inclination of a gang member would to "move in next door to you" even though this mendacious pitch - like, literally tens of thousands of other mendacious pitches-- is standard fare with Liar-in-Chief and his Florida flack Rep. Matt Goetz.

What is certain is that conservatives frighten more easily than liberals and are therefore more easily manipulated by populist demagogues.

Scientific Finding: "Conservatives Scare More Easily Than Liberals"

In my view, American conservatives fail to pass an essential Christian litmus:

"There is no fear in love.
But perfect love drives out fear, because fear has to do with punishment.
The one who fears is not made perfect in love."
1 John 4:18

What part of "there is no fear in love" don't Christian conservatives get?

When tested by the evangelist John's litmus, Christian conservatives always come down on the side of fearfulness and punishment.

There is also this truth:

Fr. Thomas Merton Explains -- In 16 Words -- Why "Christian" "Conservatives" Are Always Wrong

And finally, starting tomorrow we will hear a lot of Republican chatter about voter fraud.

In fact, Donald Trump has encouraged Republicans (on at least two occasions) to vote twice, which is a felony.

Now consider Trump's incitation-to-felony against this backdrop:

Fear these (as reported by Michael Yon) are the "peaceful protests" that Biden supports —  but he cancels campaign stops because people show up with Trump flags:

The barbarians are inside The White House.

The barbarians are inside the Supreme Court.

The barbarians are inside Congress.

But that will all change.

These "garden variety" barbarians will soon be replaced...... by devout QAnoners.

PS Some good news... NPR just reported that, despite evident attempts to suppress the vote in Pennsylvania and to cast aspersions on the integrity of Philadelphia's electoral process, 90% of the city's registered voters signed up for mail-in ballots this election cycle, and the city has spent 5 million dollars on state of the art gear to count votes. Assuming the equipment was not made in Russia, these facts bode well, although the vote will not be completely counted until Friday, giving Trump opportunity to claim Election night victory, thus establishing a narrative that will need to be refuted - in other words, an uphill battle. (Pennsylvania is home to 12.8 million people, nearly 2 million of whom live in Philadelphia and Pittsburgh.)

PPS Here is the link to FiveThirtyEight.com's predictions. https://projects.fivethirtyeight.com/2020-election-forecast/?cid=rrpromo  538 was created by America's foremost political statistician, Nate Silver, who -- on the eve of the 2016 election -- gave Trump a 26% chance of winning. Here is an interesting article about 538's unusually high rating of Trump's chances in the last election. https://fivethirtyeight.com/features/why-fivethirtyeight-gave-trump-a-better-chance-than-almost-anyone-else/  Currently, 538 gives Trump a 10% chance of winning, a number that declined another point overnight. Six weeks' ago, Nate et al's crunching of polling data gave Trump a 26% chance of winning. If you would like to see Nate's statistical predictions for individual states, keep scrolling down his "Election Forecast" page.  For example, 538 currently gives Trump a 15% chance of winning PA - and Biden an 85% chance.

If these trucks were flying Biden banners and did this to Trump's campaign bus, the Secret Service would have killed the malfeasants.

But it's Biden's bus...

And so...

Not even an arrest.

Iin 2016, Jeb Bush nailed it when he called Trump "The Chaos Candidate."

Remember: Since 2017, we've only seen it get worse.

Remember: When (if?) Trump leaves the White House, the Federal Court of New York's Southern District will convict him of a hard-time felony.
Trump knows this.
