And so they are less concerned about the present except insofar as their personal "salvation" and the "salvation of the nation" depend on "returning to the wisdom and goodness of the past" - to flee from the unprecedented evils of the present time - to seek salvation by taking refuge in bygone Golden Ages (where half of all children died by age 8, and The Founding Fathers themselves (like most other Americans) lived with toothache for half of their adult lives).

During the 2016 Republican vice-presidential campaign, Jeb Bush called Trump "The Chaos Candidate." And although I don't expect you to believe that, it is true.
Trump continually promotes the kind of chaos that calls American institutions into doubt, always to his own personal advantage.
Malignant Messiah is doing this right now with his 2020 electoral vote challenges, which - yes! - he has the right to do.
But there are two reasons why it is ill-advised.
1.) When Trump started his legal challenges, the outcome was not in serious doubt, nor is it in serious doubt now. Predictably, not one electoral vote which belonged to Biden as soon as the race was "called" will transfer to Trump's column. Not one.
"Much ado about nothing."
2.) Even more fundamentally, Trump and his cultists -- with their ceaseless conspiratorial thinking and unhinged QAnon fantasies -- have created a political milieu in which "anything MIGHT be" while denying a great many of the essential facts on which a coherent view of our personal and national experience depend.
Human-caused global warming is real.
COVID is real... and deadly - particularly for health workers and people over 60.
During the 2016 campaign Trump paid a porn star $130,000.00 to keep her mouth shut about cheating on Melania.
Trump bought his way out of a felony conviction for criminal behavior in the Trump University scandal by paying a "settlement" of $25,000,000.00.
Trump ordered his "fixer," lawyer Michael Cohen to commit a felony for which Cohen received a 3 year sentence AFTER "turning state's evidence."
The list goes on.

During my 1950s' childhood, any weirdo-relative living in an in-law apartment would have become a candidate for "insane asylum committal" as soon as s/he started spewing the kind of lunatic ideation that consumes Trump Cult, a coven of crazies who subscribe to QAnon, a new secular religion with its own messiah (i.e., Donald Trump) and its own resurrection (i.e., John Kennedy Jr. is not dead).
And that's just the beginning.
