Alan: The fraying of America has reached a point where we must confront The Inconvenient Truth that many Americans don't know how to think.
Thinking is a learned skill, and vanishingly few Trump supporters have acquired it.
In large part, Trumpistas rail against the "Intellectual Elites" because they themselves are too intellectually indolent; too stupefacted; or too crippled by blind faith in cruel, vindictive, holier-than-thou dogmas to even embark the research that is minimally necessary for a sound epistemological outcome.
Their benightedness is cheek-by-jowl with their unflinching conviction that cultists' opinions are just as good - and routinely better - than truths that bear up under deeply-contextualized scrutiny.

It does not matter to cultists that their arguments are good or true.
What matters is rhetorical advantage; that they can devise arguments -- regardless their veracity -- and the moment their argument is constructed, they assume-and-preach -- as God is their witness -- that every one of their bogus rationales is God's Truth.

As we have seen with 1,) bogus claims about hydroxychloroquine, 2.) Trump's 180 degree "next day" reversal on the traitorous comments he made at the Helsinki summit, 3,) his denial of boning porn stars, 4,) his protestation of innocence in the Trump University scandal and the scandals of his several charities, 5,) his "perfect" phone call to the president of Ukraine, 6,) his argument that "there are many fine people on both sides" of the white supremacist aisle, 7.) his denial of racism; 8,) his denial of sexism, 9,) his assertion that he has unfailing respect for the military despite dissing John McCain, General Jim Mattis, General Kelly, General McMaster and General Mark Milley, 10.) along with his vitriolic derogation of "Gold Star Families"... Trump is simply full of it.
Malignant Messiah's back teeth are brown - and the discoloration is now overtaking his middle molars.

All that matters to Trump and his mendacious minions is that they can flood media platforms with one lie after another.
The cumulative purpose of these lies is to always ensure that a temporarily "plausible" lie is foremost in the minds of rank-and-file Americans.
This continual flooding of the media with "a fire hose of falsehood" in order to flush away Truth by sheer force of The Shitstorm Torrent is a lot like virgin sacrifice: it provides short-lived satisfaction - and then, by popular demand, it's on to the next virgin.
