Alan: I will add that “Christian” “conservatives” (who are neither) lack these same shared experiences because they are more interested in the essential selfishness of "getting to heaven" than making this earth a great place to live.

I have long speculated (in an imaginary re-incarnational context... which several early Christian notables also envisioned) that we are reborn into the kind of world we most contributed to.

And those who did not contribute to “building up the world” -  to incarnating love, mercy, compassion, joy and justice — are reborn into the “mean streets” resulting from their neglect, spite and malice.
