People accuse me all the time of suffering from “Trump Derangement Syndrome.” The more I talk about the stakes in this election, the more passionate I become, the more I see Trump-inclined voters ready to dismiss me as another member of the “liberal mainstream media.” That’s the fundamental challenge for opinion journalists when we actually trying to change minds: The more we shout, the less we’re heard. |
Too often, we all preach to our bases rather than trying to reach out to those with different perspectives. So in this, my last column before the election, I made a deliberate effort to reach out to those who are undecided or who are supporting President Trump, to try to explain why I see this election as so fateful and this president so threatening. I report this piece partly by talking to old friends who voted for Trump last time around, including one who is voting for Biden now. |
So please don’t give up on Trump voters. Try to listen to them and then respectfully persuade them — and I’ve written this column so that you can send it to your Trump-inclined parents without being disinvited from Thanksgiving. Here’s the piece.
