Reports of Trump Disparaging American Troops
Nicholas Kristof
The weekend news is dominated by echoes of the Atlantic article reporting that Trump scoffed that American soldiers were “losers” and “suckers.” Trump denied the story, and some of his aides backed him, but I believe the account because I trust Jeff Goldberg, who wrote the piece; because Trump openly disparaged John McCain as a “loser” for being captured in Vietnam; because Trump disparaged gold star parents in 2016; and because Fox News reporter Jennifer Griffin confirmed the Atlantic account.
I’m also struck that Trump seems to believe that one source for The Atlantic story was his former chief of staff, Gen. John Kelly. Trump said: “I know John Kelly… and now he goes out and… bad mouths… I don’t know that it was him… but it could have been a guy like John Kelly.” The fact that the president believes that the story’s key source may have been his own former chief of staff suggests that it was exactly right.
