"St. Maximos, The Will And Universal Salvation" (With A G.K. Chesterton "Chaser")

Pax on both houses: The Threat Of Eternal Torment
St. Maximos, The Will And Universal Salvation

Alan: I am persuaded that belief in eternal, infernal torment is the foundation, the bedrock template, for malicious, punitive, vengeful thought and the underlying "frame of mind" that delights in the "righteous" torment of others.

Dogmatic insistence on the existence of Hell as "the inescapable residence of the damned," arises from a cornerstone belief that pollutes Pharisaic "Christians" with ill will and hateful thought.

In this view of the world, Justice does not exist unless those who commit hideous sins are tortured forever with no possibility of refrain.  It is not enough that these souls pass out of existence. They need to be kept alive forever in an inquisitoreal torture chamber supervised by God as Torquemada.

This God recalls Jeffrey Dauhmer determination to keep the frozen body parts of his dismembered victims, except that God-as-Dauhmer makes sure the bodies of the damned are kept alive so their flesh can be charred to the bone in everlasting sequence with the restoration of flesh so it can be tortured anew every instant along an endless timeline

Compassion?

Mercy?

Loving one's enemy?

Any creator God worthy of love would not permit this.

Any creator God worthy of love would do what humans do with suffering animals: they would "put them down" into eternal oblivion.

Let's at least worship a God who is as good as we humans are at our best.

The Thinking Housewife: "We Can Be Pretty Sure That Many Good People Are Roasting In Hell"

In traditional theological terms, wishing eternal torment on others is a spiritual calamity, the linchpin escandalon ("stumbling block") that causes most self-declared Christians to "trip up" and lose their "eternal souls."

"May he rot in Hell!"

If you believe Jesus applauds such giddy condemnation and self-satisfied ill-will, you are - at least mythically - on the side of Satan

And you worship a false God.
