Abortion, "Christian" "Conservatism," And Kamala Harris' Acceptance Speech As The Democratic Party's Vice-Presidential Candidate

Catholics Are Just As Likely To Get An Abortion As Other U.S. Women. Why?

Alan: When my Christian conservative friends listen to anyone on the "left side of the aisle," all they hear is a voice in their head chanting: "Baby killer! Baby killer! Baby killer!"
After years of close attention to the abortion "issue," I conclude that it is at least as likely that lower abortion rates prevail in those societies where 1.) abortion is legal, 2.) quality sex education is provided to budding adolescents, and 3.) contraceptives are readily accessible without any associated shame.
I am not denying that reasonable arguments are set forth by those who oppose abortion. However, the pro-life position -- as a practical matter -- is no more likely to result in fewer abortions than the pro-abortion position of societies subscribing to the 3 part abortion rationale described above. And so, conservative fixation on this "single issue" does not make a sufficiently convincing case to justify a minority of citizens imposing their moral will on the majority, especially when pro-abortion societies often exhibit the paradoxical outcome of lower abortion rates. "The terrible thing about our time is precisely the ease with which theories can be put into practice. The more perfect, the more idealistic the theories, the more dreadful is their realization. We are at last beginning to rediscover what perhaps men knew better in very ancient times, in primitive times before utopias were thought of: that liberty is bound up with imperfection, and that limitations, imperfections, errors are not only unavoidable but also salutary. The best is not the ideal. Where what is theoretically best is imposed on everyone as the norm, then there is no longer any room even to be good. The best, imposed as a norm, becomes evil.” "Conjectures of a Guilty Bystander,” by Trappist monk, Father Thomas Merton We also confront the intractable, fundamental and non-negotiable political issue that Democracy requires that policy be made by a majoritarian voting block somewhere between "a mere majority" and "a clear majority."

Only then does the American populace engage the democratic process required to determine policy.

The Corrosion Of American Democracy And The Ascendancy Of A Police State

No matter how "Christian" "conservative" theocrats interpret their "divinely ordained" authorization to replace Democracy with some rendition of theocracy, the "moral argument" of any faith-based minority -- does not justify the traitorous trashing of America's Democratic Process.

If "conservative" "Christians" undertook this "coup" openly and honestly, they would -- at minimum -- acknowledge their uncompromising passion to overthrow democratic process, replacing it with some form of platitudinous theocray.

"Conservative" "Christians" may be faithful servants of their God. But they are NOT patriots.

At bottom, "Christian" "conservatives" want to impose their mistaken belief that prohibition works. (I refer readers to the Volstead Act.)

In turn, this belief is based on a worldview (usually instilled in childhood) that legal repression (backed by punitive, if not violent, enforcement) is absolutely necessary if the world is to retain any kind of viable foundation.

There is no proof - none whatsoever - that proscribing abortion will result in fewer abortions.

And there is proof that proscription - at least sometimes - results in higher abortion rates.

Unaware that their well-intentioned wishful thinking may have paradoxical effects, pro-Life supporters ultimately insure nothing more than the self-satisfaction imposing their moral will on others while (at least sometimes) contributing to a socio-political scenario in which abortion rates rise.

Note well. For over half a century, a decisive majority of Americans have supported - and continue to support - the Supreme Court's ruling on Roe v. Wade.
