President (And Founding Father) John Adams Held That The American Constitution "Was Made Only For A Moral And Religious People. It Is Wholly Inadequate To The Government Of Any Other"

Adams emphasized the need for a virtuous citizenry to maintain a free republic, arguing that morality and religion were the foundations upon which their society was built.
However, he was also a Deist and had a latitudinarian view of religion. Indeed, Adams was firmly against the official establishment of any religion and was a champion of religious freedom. “My religion you know is not exactly conformable to that of the greatest part of the Christian World.”

Here is Merriam-Webster's definition of "religious":

1. : relating to or manifesting faithful devotion to an acknowledged ultimate reality or deity.

Although there is debate concerning the etymology of the word "religious," the derivation that makes most sense to me is that the Latin root words, "re" and "ligare" mean to "re-ligate" or to "reconnect."

Furthermore, I hold that the aspiration of this radical "reconnection" is to mend the "rent" that has run through every human being's spirit-psyche since self-reflection put an end to our entirely instinctual lives.
In my mind, religion is not only necessary but inevitable.
